Online Workshop: Expanding Your Palette & Mordanting With Natural Dyes Sat 7th & Sun 8th May
This online workshop will take place over two days & will cover all the basics of mordanting and modifying to expand your palette, deepen your understanding & grow your skills as a natural dyer.
Mordanting is an essential step in the process of natural dyeing. Mordants help bind the dye to the fibre and help increase the longevity of your plant dyes. When used correctly, mordants can change your dye colours, expand your palette and open up a world of possibilities when combined with natural dyes.
We will look at the different types of mordants, how to choose the right mordant for your needs & how to mordant safely. We will look at traditional metallic salt & natural plant-based mordants. I will share the mordants and recipes I use in my practice & studio to get a beautiful range of natural colours.
We will also look at how to layer dye colours & modify your existing palette using iron, alum & other safe modifiers.
We will address safety & concerns with metallic salt mordants, which ones to avoid & how to dispose of them properly. We will also look at how to store & reuse your mordants.
Once you have a deeper understanding of mordants and their possibilities, we will experiment with mordants to create patterns, contrast & expand your colour range. We will also have some fun painting & printing with mordants and natural dyes.
This class is for anyone who has taken my introduction to natural dyeing workshop & suited to those wanting to increase their knowledge, confidence and skills as a natural dyer.
