Online Workshop: Natural Dyeing for Beginners Sat 2nd & Sun 3rd April
This online workshop will take place over two days & will cover everything you need to know about the basics of natural dyeing. I will talk you through the most important steps to get started & build your confidence. I will speak on methods I use in my own practice to achieve a wide range of beautiful, lasting natural colours. I will also talk about what tools & equipment you will need to get started & introduce local plants available to you for dyeing.
This class is great for complete beginners or anyone new to natural dyeing. If you've dabbled a little or are unsure about where to start, maybe you are confused about scouring or mordanting or just not sure how the process works? This class will give you a clear guide on how to work through the process from start to finish, ensuring beautiful long-lasting natural colour in your practice.
We will move through each step of the process in a simple and digestible way so that you can gain a foundational understanding of how this beautiful process works.

Saturday's workshop will cover an introduction to the process with an overview of the steps involved. We will look at the different types of fibre and how you work with them. We will look at the tools & equipment necessary to start naturally dyeing. We will go over how to prepare both types of natural fibres for dye & how to mordant your fibre. We will cover the best ways to prepare your plants for dye so you can create dye baths.
Sunday we will take a look at common & in-season dye plants and ingredients that you can use to dye. Participants will have the opportunity to create dye baths and dye fibre or fabric. We will dye using a few different plants to create a selection of natural & seasonal colours. We will also look at expanding your palette and everyday ingredients that you can use to begin expanding the colours available to you. We will also cover how to wash and take care of your naturally dyed textiles so you can enjoy them for years to come.
This is a hands-on workshop so you will need to have access to running water, a stove ( or hot plate) & a selection of dye plants. Once you register for the class, I will send you a list of tools & equipment ( which are all common kitchen tools ) & a list of potential dye plants for your to gather ahead of class. You can choose to follow alongside me from the comfort of your home or sit back & watch while I demonstrate, learning in whatever way works best for you.
You will receive a link with access before the workshop with a reminder closer to the event. You don't need to install or download any software to join. The workshop will be available to replay at your convenience for 14 days after the event.
