When I first started to explore natural dyes, it all felt a little overwhelming, not only was there so much information out there, much of what I was learning conflicted. I wasn't sure where to begin or how to get a solid grasp on the most important aspects of this beautiful process. In putting together these natural dye kits, I have done so with my first experiences & the complete beginner in mind. Understanding what its like to first step into this process, our natural dye kits have been created to make the process as straightforward, simple and enjoyable as possible.
Our natural dye kits come with your choice of un-dyed natural fibre: 100% pure Irish linen or Donegal wool. If you'd like to try your hand at dyeing both, we have the perfect kit for you.
Our simple step by step instructions guide your through the process of natural dyeing, from scouring (preparing) your fibre, to mordanting (helping the colour fix), dyeing & aftercare. Our instructions will take you through the process from un-dyed fibre to beautifully finished naturally dyed textiles.
Our dye kits come with our tried and tested mordants for either plant or animal fibres, along with instructions on how to mordant. If this is an aspect of natural dyeing you've been struggling with, we have simplified the process so you can get great results while building your confidence.
"Learning to extract colour from plants and using this to dye fibres & textiles is a incredibly satisfying, rewarding and peaceful process. Getting lost in the alchemy, exploration & the soothing world of colour is a wonderful way to connect to your environment, while learning a process that respects the valuable resources of our beautiful earth."
Natural fibres are divided into two categories, plant fibres (linen, cotton, hemp, etc.) or animal fibres (wool, cashmere, silk, etc.). When you work with natural fibres or fabrics, plant & animal fibres have to be treated differently. From how they are prepared for dye, scoured, mordanted & treated in the dye pot, the two types of fibre require different treatment throughout the process of natural dyeing. With this in mind we have created our natural dye kits to reflect their differences.
We have two types of plant fibre kits, a basic one with everything you need to get started on all plant fibres or our Irish linen kit with 1 mtr. of beautifully woven un-dyed linen.
We have two types of animal fibre kits, a basic with everything you need to get started dyeing all animal fibres or our Donegal Aran wool kits with either 100g or 200g of un-dyed wool.
For those of you that would like to experiment with both fibre types, we have the perfect kit for you. It has everything you need to get started along with un-dyed Irish linen & Donegal Aran wool.
